New Delhi List of deadly cyclones in India and Bangladesh Cyclone Emphon in the Bay of Bengal has affected India and Bangladesh extensively. Many people have lost their lives and suffered extensive losses. It is the most severe cyclone in the last 20 years, which took the form of a super cyclone. It hit the Indian coast on Wednesday. The super cyclone that came to Odisha before Emphon killed thousands of people in 1999 and left a large number of people homeless. Cyclones have a long history in India and Bangladesh. Due to these many times the coastal population has to suffer tremendous losses.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) operated by the US Department of Commerce, the deadliest cyclones have been in India and Bangladesh. These two countries have witnessed six of the 10 deadliest cyclones. The most severe cyclone was the 1970 Bhola cyclone, which killed about 5 lakh people in India and Bangladesh.
In 1999, Super Cyclone took ten thousand lives in Odisha: Super Cyclone Amphon is the second Super Cyclone to be built in the Bay of Bengal in the last nearly twenty years. During 17 and 18 May, it has gained a lot of speed and the wind speed has accelerated to 220-230 kmph. However, before this, the super cyclone which came in Odisha in 1999 caused great destruction. After this it is the second super cyclone to be formed in the Bay of Bengal.
There was a catastrophe in Odisha: About 20 years ago, in the month of October, Super Cyclone caused tremendous devastation in Odisha. Due to this, about ten thousand people were killed and about three and a half lakh houses were destroyed. Many villages were completely destroyed and millions of animals were killed. About 2.5 million people were affected by this. However its intensity was underestimated at that time. At the same time the path was also misunderstood.
It happened that day: around 29 noon on October 29, 1999, it hit the Paradip island of Odisha. Its magnitude can be gauged from the fact that the speed of the winds had reached a speed of 260 kmph. Although there were attempts to evacuate some people earlier, these arrangements were inadequate in terms of a large population. The super cyclone caused tremendous havoc for about eight hours.
It is common for cyclones to form before the onset of the monsoon or just during the onset of the monsoon. At least five cyclones form in a year in the Bay of Bengal, one during the May – June period and the remaining four during the October – December period. Sea surface temperature is one of the major elements that contribute to the formation of cyclones. Since sea surface temperatures are high during the summer months, conditions are favorable for cyclones to form in May and June.
